Jadal Saloon: How does art affect the way we live in our city?
On Wednesday 22/3/2017 – at 7 PM – 9 PM
What happens when we make art? And especially, what happens when we make art in public places? How does public art impact the community in which the art takes place? What kinds of relations between people can be built or transformed through art? How does art affect the way that we encounter one another, our city, and ourselves? And what kinds of knowledge or action does this make possible?
Jadal for Knowledge and Culture is happy to invite you for a new #Jadal_Saloon* with Colin McLaughlin-Alcock** who will present an introduction to anthropological thinking about art, leading to a general discussion about the role of art in our city and our lives using specific examples of art in Amman.
*Jadal Saloon is a weekly discussion, that takes place every Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Each time we choose a topic related to science, society or philosophy to discuss collectively. We hope that these weekly gatherings will encourage discussions, sharing and building knowledge. Your suggestions regarding topics to discuss are more than welcome.
**Colin McLaughlin-Alcock is a PhD candidate in the department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on public and participatory art in Amman. He is also the founder and curator of the blog “Amman K-Medina Fanniye” (http://ammankmedinafanniye.weebly.com/).
This saloon will be in English. We are working on preparing an Arabic version, which we hope to offer at Jadal this summer.
