Racha sees her work as a reflection on physical, mental and spiritual movement, without which the universe would lose its dynamic balance. She celebrates motion by taking the viewer on a journey within the work. Her birds appear to glide and sweep across the canvas in a continuous flow of vibrant colours and patterns of energy, balancing between the figurative and the abstract, between presence and absence. In a sense, Racha’s canvases are a dynamic extension of her psyche. “My work,” she says, “mirrors my eternal struggle to find balance…to live is to keep moving.”
Born in Damascus, Syrian-Canadian artist Racha Kuzbari Khoja lived in various parts of the world as the daughter of an ambassador. She took courses at York University in Toronto and studied illustration and design at Ritin’s Studio for Art, attending courses in Mural Painting, Mosaic, Fresco and Faux Finishes. Racha later trained with prominent Canadian artist John Smith for three years. She has held eight solo exhibitions in Damascus, Beirut and Toronto, and participated in group shows in Canada, France, Spain, the USA, Syria and Saudi Arabia. She lives and works in Damascus.
