“What is a refugee camp?” @ French Institute, in Jabal Al Webdeh

After the success of 2016 edition, the French institute repeats the ”Nuits des idées” on January 26th on ”Common World”. In 2017, the event becomes interactive and international!
In a time where Jordan is receiving a huge number of Syrian refugees, among which 20% live in the camps, this situation challenges us towards the permanence of Palestinian camps in the region. If such issues emerge from different contexts, they encourage us to think; what is a refugee camp today, from transversal views of the actors who worked on or inside the camps.
Speakers: Jalal Al Husseini, researcher at the French institute for Near East, Agnès Montanari, Photographer in Amman, Rand Al Haj Hassan, Architect in Amman, Ayham Dalal, Architect, PhD student, TU Berlin, Nawar Bulbul, actor and theater director, and Bart Pitchford, phd Student in Texas University (Austin), actor and anthropologist.

في وقتٍ تستضيف فيه الأردن عدداً هائلاً من اللاجئين السوريين، يعيش 20% منهم في المخيمات، يطرح الوضع الراهن تحدي استدامة مخيمات اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في الإقليم. إذا كانت هذه المشكلات قد ظهرت من سياقات مختلفة، فإنها تدعونا إلى التفكير بماهية مخيمات اللاجئين اليوم انطلاقاً من وجهات نظر متباينة للقائمين على المخيمات أو العاملين فيها

A l’heure où la Jordanie accueille un très grand nombre de réfugiés syriens, dont près de 20% vivent dans des camps, cette situation interroge face à la permanence des camps palestiniens dans la région. Si ces problématiques relèvent de contextes différents, elles nous invitent à penser ce qu’est un camp de réfugiés aujourd’hui à partir du regard croisé d’acteurs ayant travaillé sur ou dans les camps.
