تعرّض مفهوم الطوباويّة إلى تاريخ مضطرب، ابتداءً من كتاب أفلاطون “الجمهورية” حيث تم إقصاء الشعر من تكوين المجتمع المثالي، على الرغم من أن الشعر في ذلك الوقت كان يمثل اختصارًا لمعنى الفن المعاصر اليوم. وخلال القرون التي تلت بعد ذلك، أثرُت النزعة الأفلاطونية في تشكيل نماذج مثالية ولكنها كانت إقصائية بشكل مستتر. وبعد صياغة المصطلح كما ينبغي في كتاب توماس مور “الطوباوية” الذي يعتبر مرجعًا في الفكر الطوباوي تم تلقيه والتعامل معه على أنه محض سخرية من فكرة الطوباويّة بدلًا من اعتباره قراءة تأملية جادة. وفي القرن العشرين استمر هذا التباين حيث جاء مفهوم الطوباوية ليدعم إيديولوجيات متناقضة كالفاشية الأوروبية ونظام التحرير اللاهوتي
تهدف هذه المحاضرة إلى بيان مكانة مفهوم الطوباوية في ممارسة الفن في عمّان. فما هي الطرق التي يظهر فيها الخيال الطوباوي بمثابة امتداد مستتر لأساليب العيش الحالية، عوضًا عن أن يكون وسيلة للتحرر منها؟ وإذا ما تم دمج الطوباوية بثقافة المجتمع الاستهلاكي، ما هي المصطلحات البديلة التي يمكن اعتمادها؟ ذلك إذا اتخذنا من مصطلح الهيتروتوبيا (*) مفهومًا بديلًا سوف نستكشف نماذج متعددة من الأفكار والممارسات الفنيّة تأخذنا إلى ما بعد الفرق بين الممكن والمستحيل

Join us on Friday for a talk by Abdullah M. Awad, as part of a series of public talks by invited guest speakers on utopian thinking. The talk will take place at the Ossama Al Mashini theatre (Ministry of Culture) in Jabal Weibdeh. The talk will be in English followed by a Q&A session.

Abdullah M. Awad is the Director of the Institute for Critical Thought, where he convenes seminars on politics, philosophy, and aesthetics.

The concept of utopia has a troubled history. Beginning with The Republic, Plato’s perfected society necessitated the exclusion of poetry, or of what we might today call aesthetic practice. In the centuries to follow, similar Platonic ideals worked their way into medieval thought. Thomas More’s publication of Utopia, when the term was properly coined, came with ambivalence, and the book was interpreted by some as satirical commentary rather than a work of earnest speculation. Such ambivalence persisted into the 20th century, when the concept was used to consolidate phenomena as disparate as European fascism and liberation theology.

In this talk, we will situate the practice of art in Amman against the concept of utopia. In what ways does the utopian imagination serve as a veiled extension of, rather than emancipation from, the way things already are? Is utopianism, in its traditional form, an unwittingly conservative endeavor? And if the concept of utopia itself has been incorporated into consumer culture, with what other language can we go forward? In considering heterotopia as an alternative, we will explore modes of thought which push past the boundary between the possible and impossible. We will ask, in turn, what kind of art can we cultivate
