This performance takes us on a journey into the shimmering world of the timeless poems of Rumi, the great Master of Love. Rhythms, dances, songs of love and lament, divine mysticism and wonder are omnipresent in the Arabic & Farsi verses of Rumi, set to music by Kiya Tabassian with the collaboration of Ghalia Benali. Created for an ensemble composed of Arabic, Persian and Turkish instrument virtuosos, this concert showcases musicians from different parts of Canada, Jordan and Tunisia-Belgium.<\/p>\n
Kiya Tabassian, setar, composition & artistic direction<\/p>\n
A setar virtuoso and an acclaimed composer born in Iran, Kiya Tabassian has performed on stages throughout the world with his ensemble Constantinople. He collaborated as a composer, performer and improviser with Radio-Canada, the international MediMuses project, the Atlas Ensemble (Holland), the Orchestre symphonique de Montr\u00e9al, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, and the European Broadcasting Union. Since 2017, he is Associate Artist at the prestigious Rencontres musicales de Conques festival where he presents Constantinople\u2019s most recent creations every year. He co-founded the Centre des musiciens du monde in Montreal in 2017, for which he serves as Artistic Director. His artistic projects and creations have received the support of the Arts Councils in Quebec and Canada for years.<\/p>\n
Ghalia Benali, voice & co-composition<\/p>\n
Ghalia Benali is a Tunisian-Belgian artist who started her artistic career in 1992 as a singer, writer, composer, dancer, visual artist, painter, designer & actress. Blending different types of music, connecting different cultures, reviving the old and rooting the new are a natural outcome of mixing the two extremes she lived through. Her music has been noted for its attribution to multiple genres and for defining contemporary Arabic music.<\/p>\n
Constantinople<\/p>\n
Constantinople is a musical ensemble that chose the journey\u2014geographical certainly, but also historical, cultural and inner\u2014as its cornerstone. Inspired by the ancient city illuminating the East and West, Constantinople was founded in 1998 in Montreal by its artistic director, Kiya Tabassian. Regularly invited to perform in international festivals and prestigious concert halls, such as the Salle Pleyel, the Berliner Philharmonie, Cervantino Festival, or the BOZAR, Constantinople is acclaimed by the public, music professionals and critics alike. The ensemble has 17 albums to its credit. Over the course of the decade, Constantinople has created more than 40 works and travelled to nearly 140 cities in 30 countries.<\/p>\n
