SUMMARY:The Novel and the City: A Talk by Abbad Yahya - November 19
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be held in Arabic. English translation will be available.\nRSVP using eventbrite here: http://bit.ly/2yTus9t \nHow does a novel that portrays the Arab city today become part of the conflict over public space? How can the novel uncover the alliance of “opposites” in approaching freedoms? Why do novels\, and art in general\, provoke public reaction more than reality itself? \nAbbad Yahya will raise questions regarding the intersectionality among the novel\, the city\, the sexual narrative\, and power. \nAbbad Yahya is a novelist and researcher from Ramallah. Since the publication of his most recent novel\, A Crime in Ramallah (2017)\, he has not been able to return home due to the banning of his novel and an arrest warrant against him. \nYahya’s published work includes Rām Allāh al-shaqrāʼ (Blonde Ramallah) (2012)\, al-Qism 14 (Section 14) (2014)\, and Hātif ʻumūmī (Public telephone) (2015). He has also published numerous papers on the social and epistemological conditions for sociological production in the Palestinian community\, and continues to write for several Arab newspapers and publications. \nAbbad Yahya has worked as an assistant researcher at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and acting chief editor for Tabayyun Magazine for Philosophical and Cultural Studies. He holds a Master of Arts in Sociology\, and received a scholarship to complete his PhD in social sciences\, which he has been unable to pursue due to his arrest warrant.
