DESCRIPTION:يقدّم براين كونلي قصّة جايمس جويس التي لا تصدّق، والتي يوصف فيها كيف يصبح الشخص فنّاناً تجاوباً مع الظروف والإحباط الفلسفي والعنف العرقي، ومساءلة الأفكار المرتبطة بالعنف والحيوانيّة. يأخذ هذا التقديم الجمهور في رحلة عبر العلوم والفلسفة وكيفيّة اعتبار الفن، في رأيه، أكثر أشكال التواصل فعاليّة وتعقيداً: الشكل الذي يمكنه خلق مساحة فعل لا طوباويّة، متضاربة، لكنها تحرريّة. \nتتنوّع ممارسات براين كونلي ما بين الفن والعلوم والسياسة لتنتج أداءات إذاعيّة ومنحوتات وتجهيزات فنيّة تشاركيّة وتلك التي تستند إلى البحث. تعنى أعمال براين، المستمدّة من خلفيّة انتقائيّة تمتد ما بين النحت والأداء والفلسفة والعلوم السلوكيّة إلى جذور العنف المجتمعي وأصول اللغة، واحتماليّة وجود تواصل ذو معنىً حتّى عبر الانقسامات الجذريّة، مثلاً: بين الإنسان والحيوان، أو الإنسان والآلة. \nبراين كونلي فنان من أوكلاند بكاليفورنيا، حيث يعمل أستاذاً في برنامج الدراسات العليا للفنون الجميلة والنحت في جامعة كليّة كاليفورنيا للفنون (CCA). ساهم براين بتأسيس، ويحرر مجلة Cabinet مع سينا نجفي، وهي فصليّة عالميّة تعنى بالفن والثقافة. وهو منظّم في “صدى”: معهد لتعليم الفن عن بعد في بغداد، وفنان زائر سابق في الجامعة الأميركيّة بالقاهرة. منذ العام 2006 حتى الآن، أدار براين ورشات عمل في CCA للطلاب والكليّة من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. \nيقام اللقاء في “مكان مكان مكان” بجبل اللويبدة وباللغة الإنجليزيّة. يتبع اللقاء جلسة نقاشيّة. \nBrian Conley will present a highly improbable Joycean tale describing how someone becomes an artist in response to circumstance\, philosophical disappointment\, ethical violation\, and a questioning of ideas related to violence and animality. His presentation will take the audience from science through philosophy to consider why art\, in his view\, is the most potent and complex form of communication\, a form that can create a non-utopic\, conflicted\, but liberatory space of action. \nFrom radio performance to sculptural\, research-based\, collaborative installations\, and artist institutions\, Conley’s artistic practice operates across the divides between science\, art\, and politics. Drawing from an eclectic background that spans sculpture and performance\, philosophy and behavioral science\, his work is centrally concerned with the roots of social violence\, the origins of language\, and the possibility of meaningful communication even across radical divides – for example\, between human and animal\, or human and machine. \nBrian Conley is an artist from Oakland\, California\, where he is a professor in the graduate fine arts and sculpture programs of the California College of the Arts (CCA). He is founding co-editor with Sina Najafi of Cabinet magazine\, an international art-and-culture quarterly. He has served as Educational and Curatorial Adviser to Sada (Echo) for Contemporary Iraqi Art\, and as visiting artist at the American University in Cairo. From 2006 to the present\, he has organized a working group at CCA of students and faculty from across the MENA region. \nThe talk will take place at Makan Makan Makan in Jabal Weibdeh and will be in English followed by a Q&A session.
