No tickets are needed. \nAbstract:\nAre there other ways to think about civil society when considering its role for democratization and progressive politics? Italian philosopher and political activist Antonio Gramsci’s reading of Marxism represents a creative\, flexible and bold approach to address this issue. He proposed looking at civil society as an ‘ideological battleground’ where to engage in a new\, daring political project of emancipation. \nBio:\nMassimo Ramaioli comes from Milan\, Italy. He is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Syracuse University\, with concentrations in Comparative Politics and International Relations. His main research focus is on political Islam.\nPreviously\, he studied at the University of Pavia\, Italy\, earning a BA in Social Sciences for Cooperation and Development and an MA in African and Asian Studies. He then enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies\, London\, to gain an MA in Middle Eastern Studies. Before joining SU PhD program\, he moved to Damascus to improve his Arabic proficiency. He has also studied Arabic in Tunis\, Beirut and Fes.\nHe is currently based in Amman carrying out field research and working as an instructor as the Center for International Exchange and Education. He is also a regular contributor for Quadrante Futuro for the Einaudi Research Center\, Turin\, where he writes about Middle East political economy.
