تحت الاحتلال النازي، عجوز فرنسي وابنة أخيه يجبران على استضافة ضابط ألماني. كنوعٍ من المقاومة، يلتزم الاثنان بالصمت بحضور الضابط الألماني. يجلس الضابط قرب المدفأة كل مساء، يتكلم عن بلده، موسيقاه ورؤيته المثالية للعلاقة بين فرنسا وألمانيا، دون أي استجابة من قبل العجوز وابنة اخيه.

Under Nazi occupation, an elderly Frenchman and his niece must board a German officer. As a form of resistance, they enter pact of silence when the officer is present. Each evening the officer warms himself by the fire and talks of his country, his music, and his idealistic views of the relationship between France and Germany, without any response from the man and his niece.
